Phys. Rev. B 65, 012414 (2001) [3 pages]Ferromagnetic ground state for Mn-Co surface ordered alloy on a Co(001) substrateReceived 26 July 2001; published 7 December 2001 Recent low-energy electron diffraction experiments concerning submonolayer Mn coverage on Co/Cu(001) substrates displayed a well-defined Mn0.5Co0.5 surface-ordered alloy. Through the magneto-optic Kerr effect and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism a ferromagnetic coupling between Mn and Co was obtained. Ab initio density functional theory within a generalized gradient approximation is able to explain these results. © 2001 The American Physical Society URL:
