On the Pd(111) surface (√7×√7) R19.1°S structure was observed. This structure was studied by scanning tunneling microscopy and scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS). In both modes atomic resolution is achieved. With STS two S species, in fcc and hcp sites of the Pd(111) surface, are identified. Theoretical estimates of the surface density of states show small differences for the S at the two different sites.
