Ionic pseudo-Hamiltonians, which replace core electrons in atomic calculations, are used to build a jelliumlike model, which describes electronic ground state and excitation properties of atomic clusters. As an application, we successfully describe the plasmon resonance in lithium clusters for which recent rexperimental data have shown the failure of the conventional jellium model.
